Srinagar, Mar 27 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday acknowledged persistent power supply issues in several areas of Kangan constituency, stating that overloading of existing infrastructure and rising demand are the primary causes of intermittent outages.
Replying to an unstarred question by MLA Mian Mehar Ali in the Legislative Assembly, the government, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that areas including Awan Pati Mammar, Hariganwan, Rayil Khover, Bonzilla, Sildari Chattergul, Chounti Waliwar, Arhama, Thune and Rayil are facing frequent power interruptions.
It said that the existing distribution network is under stress due to a sustained increase in demand, leading to overloading and disruptions in supply.
“To mitigate these issues, augmentation and improvement works have been undertaken in affected areas,” the government said, adding that the distribution capacity at Kasana Mohalla, Hariganwan, has been enhanced from 63 KVA to 100 KVA.
It further said that a 100 KVA transformer is being installed at Faqeer Mohalla, Chounti Waliwar, under TSP 2025-26, while LT network improvement and HT/LT strengthening works are also being carried out under various schemes, including CDF and UT Capex.
The government said that the remaining areas will be covered in a phased manner, subject to availability of resources and completion of smart metering.
It also informed that a 1×6.3 MVA receiving station at Wangath and augmentation of the receiving station at Surfraw from 5+6.3 MVA to 2×6.3 MVA have been completed, significantly improving overall power availability in the region.
Meanwhile, the government said that surveys and technical assessments are conducted periodically to identify requirements for augmentation, including the installation of additional transformers and strengthening of existing infrastructure.
“Construction of new receiving stations is taken up wherever found technically feasible and subject to availability of funds and necessary approvals,” it added.
In the meantime, the department said that load balancing, augmentation of transformers and strengthening of distribution lines are being carried out to ensure improved and reliable power supply to the affected areas—(KNO)
